This is food related, I promise. Actually, that’s all this is about it just happens to be for babies. The doctor recommended we buy “stage one” purees. I thought I would make them for Baby G but then I started reading about Baby Led Weaning. We are only a few weeks in but so far it has been a massive hit.
Baby Led Weaning is basically giving the baby whole foods, salt free, of what the rest of the family is eating. I had grand designs to begin him with an avocado and I was going to make a big deal of it. But one day I was eating my lunch and he completely freaked out and demanded my broccoli. It took me an hour to pick off all the broccoli he had so much fun.
I don’t spoon feed him these foods, I just place them in front of him and he goes to town. He’s pretty capable of mashing the foods into what is essentially a puree anyway.
The pattern I’ve noticed with him when I introduce a new food it is all about exploration. Baby scientist indeed. He explores the food and it gets everywhere. The second offering of the same foods is more about eating now that he recognizes what he is receiving. So far apricots and sweet potatoes have been his favorite.
This morning he saw me carrying peaches to the kitchen table and he flipped out knowing he was going to get one soon. He attacks them with surprising ferocity.
I’m adding a new food every 4 days to watch out for any food allergies. I admit that part is driving me nuts because it feels so slow. I also try to make sure he has nursed ahead of time so that he isn’t super hungry and can enjoy himself.
The mess is incredible and I have tried to embrace it. Sharing foods with him and seeing what he likes is SO MUCH FUN. I haven’t actually seen him dislike anything but the preferences are obvious. Right now I’m just having fun introducing him to new things. I’m also trying new foods because I want to set a good example. Parenting win.
Foods we’ve tried thus far:
