I hope everyone is doing well! Because Thanksgiving is such a food centric holiday we often tend to over eat. If you are traveling for the holiday it can be exhausting making sure everyone and everything is in the car. By the time we reach our destination we often want to get inside and relax. Once of the adjustments to living so much farther from my work has been how little I feel I move around during the day. I am not sure what happened I think this has crept up on me over time but I have become less active. I never used to sit down and watch TV because I didn’t have one! Now my commute is longer and I sometimes enjoy curling up on the couch to watch TV. My back has been bothering me more often recently and I had realized how much more I am sitting.
Zach got me a pedometer that connects to our WiiU. I was SURE that with my daily exercise and my new conscious efforts to stand up when I realized I was sitting, I could easily reach the 10,000 steps a day goal. Yeah not even close. This has been a real eye opener I am more sedentary than I realized. I need to move more and I know that it makes my body feel good. Sadly I am averaging about 3,500 steps a day. With this feedback I have taken some action to walk more. I walked to the pharmacy the other day instead of driving. I am a goal oriented person so this has been really great for me. I am competitive with myself and the pedometer.
So if you are traveling in the coming weeks, perhaps suggest a family hike once you reach your destination? Or when you stop for gas take a walk. Walking more and standing up more often has helped my back. When my students are working on their theory exercises I have been suggesting moving to the floor to get a plank or two in. I’m feeling better and that’s awesome.
Now onto food! I never cared for the canned cranberry sauce. A few years ago I started buying fresh cranberries and dumping loads of sugar into the pot to make a rather yummy dish. But that is not super healthy so this week my goal was to lighten up that dish.
1 12 ounce bag fresh Cranberries
1/2 pomegranate seeds
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
3 TBS Maple Syrup
1/4 cup Orange Juice
1/4 cup water
1/2 cinnamon stick
Place all ingredients into a large saucepan and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to medium low and simmer until the cranberries are tender, about 20 minutes.
I love how beautiful the deep red color of these jewels are 🙂
- Do you sit too much?
- How do you work walking into your schedule?
- Does your family do anything to stay moving during the holidays?
