Mussel Bar is a sister restaurant to Brasserie Beck (read about here) with two locations in Maryland and one in Virginia. Robert Wiedmaier’s restaurant reminds me so much of Belgium and moules frites, which is good because that is pretty much his mission statement for this restaurant. I haven’t been back to Belgium since I was in middle school, which is a real shame since I loved the trip. Until I do return I get my moules frites with beer fix at Mussel Bar.
Yeah you read that correctly frites AND beer: all Gluten Free. I was surprised about the fries to be honest, I expected them to not be gluten free friendly. There was not a gluten free menu when I asked but I did make best friends with the waiter who recommended items for me. I ordered the Mediterranean Mussels
with Merguez Sausage, Goat Cheese Cilantro, Harissa Aioli, Smokey Tomato Broth. I know! I don’t even like cilantro and thought I hated goat cheese but it was SO good. The restaurant is well known for their beer selections which is great for those who can partake, they have 3 gluten free beers and 1 cider.
I over ate, mostly because I am a moules frites addict and the opportunity to get fries is not always available. Their fries are served with a three types of mayo, which is seriously awesome. Send me home with aioli and fries please?
Make a reservation because this joint is hopping. Sit back, relax and pretend you are in Belgium on a nice summer night outside at a café eating the most awesome moules frites and wash it all down with a gluten free beer. Because you can.
